To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark. -Victor Hugo
Parents have gained Montessorian tips and strategies to implement at home during the Early Childhood Parent Education Talk this week.
Early Childhood Division Head Gina spelled out how early literacy education helps children develop essential skills to be successful readers.
- Print motivation
- Print awareness
- Phonological awareness
- Narrative skills
- Letter knowledge
The above are the 6 skills that every child needs at an early age to be ready to read, said Gina.
She offered examples of what parents can do at home to help children hone these skills and tips for effective reading with child.
“Make reading time a special time at your home and model an enjoyment of reading, and it will nurture a lifelong interest in reading,” she said.
The annual Literacy Week, which is slated on April 19-23, is one of the events at MSB that inspire children’s passion for reading. The English Department and Library have been busy preparing a string of activities during the week. Students will have peer-to-peer reading sessions and talk to guest presenters about literature and illustration.
