Counselor's Hub: Maintaining Balance

  • Counselor's Hub: Maintaining Balance

It is important to have a balance of mind, spirit, and body. Establishing and maintaining Harmony needs actions to give our bodies what they need. After online activities every day I recommend recreation time for your child to do something that they need, physically, emotionally, and socially to Restore Balance. Our students and teachers are sedentary, and our bodies need movement to stimulate blood to major organs and fight back fatigue. It always surprises me how exhausting sitting still is, and I am reminded of just how much natural and planned movement is integrated into the average school day.

Students are used to playing, going upstairs, swinging on bars, running, chasing and walking numerous kilometers each day. What is their normal step count during in-person schooling compared with what it is since they have been online?  We have now defaulted to online activities for 4 weeks which accumulatively may be taking a toll on their movement, happiness, and connection with others.

Online activity, despite the best planning, is largely confined to screens, a place, a chair, a table, and digital devices. I want to encourage you to encourage your child to:
•    Take their lunch outside
•    Go for a walk, run, jog
•    Go to a park, climb, swing
•    Play a sport(badminton, tennis, table tennis, etc.)
•    Skip rope
•    Bounce
•    Stretch
•    Sing & Dance
•    Read under a tree
•    Walk on the grass, barefoot
•    Speak to a friend
•    Laugh
•    Listen to music
•    Play an instrument
•    Draw

Get off digital screens at every opportunity to re-establish Harmony & Balance.
What other things can you do and remember, Harmony needs action, what will you do?
